Creating a Google Business Profile takes ten minutes. Getting it verified is where most Nigerian businesses stop — and an unverified profile does not appear properly in search or on Maps. This guide covers exactly what Google is looking for.
Why verification exists at all
Google Maps only has value if the businesses on it are real. Fake listings, invented addresses and hijacked profiles are a serious problem worldwide, so Google now demands proof before a listing goes live. That proof is what verification is.
Postcard verification, once the standard, has largely given way to video. For Nigerian businesses this is actually good news: postcards frequently never arrived, leaving owners waiting weeks for something that was never coming.
Video verification, step by step
The recording must be made through the Google Maps app on a phone, signed in to the account that manages the profile. A video filmed separately and uploaded later will not be accepted — Google requires it captured live inside the app.
- Stand outside your premises before you start. The recording should begin in the street, not inside.
- Film the surroundings. Neighbouring shops, the road, any street sign or recognisable landmark. This is how Google confirms the location is where you say it is — and it matters far more in Nigeria, where street numbering is often unreliable.
- Show your signboard clearly. Your business name must be readable, and it must match the name on your profile exactly.
- Walk inside. Show the counter, the stock, the equipment, the workspace — whatever proves the business trades here.
- Prove you run it. Unlock the store room, open the till, operate the POS, handle inventory. Google needs evidence of authority, not just presence.
The rules that decide pass or fail
- One continuous take. No cuts, no edits, no stitching two clips together.
- Length. At least 30 seconds; one to two minutes is comfortable. Keep it under three.
- Quiet. Record when nobody is talking. Voices and background conversation cause rejections.
- Steady hands. Walk slowly. Shaky footage is hard for a reviewer to read.
- Location on. Allow the app access to location, camera and microphone.
Reviews typically take up to about five working days. Google controls that timing — anyone promising you an exact date is promising something they cannot deliver.
Why Nigerian businesses fail this
In our experience the causes repeat, and almost none of them are about video quality:
- The name does not match the signboard. If your board reads “Odogwu Gadget” but your profile says “Odogwu Gadget — Best Phone Store Enugu”, that mismatch alone can sink it.
- No permanent signage. A banner or a printed paper is not enough. Google wants fixed, professional signage.
- An address Google cannot place. Many Nigerian addresses are described by landmark rather than number. If the pin does not sit where the video was filmed, the reviewer cannot confirm anything.
- The wrong business model selected. Google now asks how you operate. Choosing “online only” when you have a physical shop causes problems later.
Before you record: a five-minute check
Fix these first and your chances improve dramatically.
- Profile name is exactly what is painted on your signboard — no added keywords, no city names, no slogans.
- The map pin sits on your actual door, not roughly on the street.
- Your signage is fixed, clean and readable from the road.
- You have something on hand that proves authority — keys, till, stock room.
- Category is chosen and correct (see choosing the right category).
If it is rejected
Rejection is not the end. You can record again, and you can appeal. What you must not do is repeatedly resubmit the same video that already failed, or create a second profile for the same business — duplicate listings are a common route to suspension.
Work out which of the five failure causes above applies, fix that one thing, then submit again.
After verification
Verification only makes you visible. It does not make you rank. Appearing in the three businesses Google shows first is a separate job — category, description, photos, reviews and consistency all feed it. That is covered in ranking in the Google Maps top three.
