Google shows three businesses in the local pack. Fourth place is invisible. This is what moves you up, in the order that matters.
1. Your primary category — the biggest lever there is
Nothing on your profile affects visibility more. Google matches searches to categories, so the narrowest accurate category almost always beats the broad one.
“Electronics store” competes with every electronics seller in your city. “Cell phone store” competes only with phone sellers — and matches what people actually type. Choose precisely, not broadly.
More on this in choosing your category.
2. Reviews — volume, rating and recency together
Reviews are the strongest signal you can influence directly. What matters is not just how many, but how recent, and whether you reply.
- Ask every satisfied customer. Most will do it if asked at the right moment — when they are happy, in person, before they leave.
- Reply to all of them, good and bad. It signals an active, real business.
- Never buy reviews. Google detects patterns and the penalty is severe.
- Keep them coming. Twenty reviews from last year is weaker than ten from this quarter.
3. Distance — and what you can do about it
Google favours businesses near the searcher, and you cannot move your shop. What you can do is be unambiguous about where you are: an accurate pin, correct service areas, and area names in your description where they read naturally.
4. Completeness
Profiles that are fully filled in outperform those that are not. Hours, phone, website, description, services, attributes — and photographs. Real photographs of your premises, your stock and your team, added regularly rather than once.
5. Consistency across the web
Your business name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear — your profile, your website, your Facebook page, any directory. Contradictions make Google less confident, and less confidence means lower placement.
What does not work
- Keywords in the business name. It looks like a shortcut and it is the fastest route to suspension.
- Google Posts as a ranking tool. Posts increase engagement and clicks, which is worth doing, but they do not directly lift your position.
- Fake addresses to appear in another area. Google verifies, and the penalty outlasts the benefit.
- Bought reviews. Detected, removed, and damaging.
A realistic timeline
Once verified, expect movement over weeks rather than days. Categories and completeness can shift things quickly. Reviews compound gradually. In a competitive category in Lagos or Abuja, expect it to take longer than in a smaller market — the work is the same, but there are more businesses fighting for the same three positions.
