Category is the single biggest on-profile decision you will make. Get it wrong and you compete in the wrong race — or in a race nobody is running.
How categories actually work
When somebody searches, Google matches the search to categories before it looks at anything else. If your category does not match, no amount of reviews or photographs will put you in that result.
You choose one primary category and may add secondary ones. The primary carries most of the weight, so it should describe the thing you most want to be found for — not everything you happen to sell.
The rule: narrowest accurate
Pick the most specific category that is genuinely true. Specific categories have fewer competitors and match how people search.
| Business | Too broad | Better |
|---|---|---|
| Phone and accessories shop | Electronics store | Cell phone store |
| Iron and steel stockist | Building materials | Steel distributor / Reinforcing steel supplier |
| Skincare and cosmetics | Store | Cosmetics store / Beauty supply store |
| Solar installer | Electrical shop | Solar energy equipment supplier |
| Hotel with suites | Lodging | Hotel / Serviced apartment |
| Restaurant serving local food | Restaurant | Nigerian restaurant |
| Laptop sales and repair | Computer store | Computer repair service (or Computer store, by what you sell most) |
Secondary categories: useful, but do not overdo it
Add secondary categories only where they genuinely describe part of the business. Stuffing in unrelated ones dilutes what Google understands you to be, and can look like manipulation.
A phone shop that also repairs phones should have both. A phone shop that adds “Internet cafe” because it once sold data does not.
How to find the right one
- Write down the exact phrase a customer would search to find you.
- Search it yourself and look at the three businesses Google shows first.
- Open their profiles and note the category shown under their name.
- If that category is genuinely accurate for you, it is almost certainly your primary.
This works because the businesses already ranking have effectively told you what Google associates with that search.
Changing your category later
You can change it, and if it is currently wrong you should. But change it on its own — not alongside a name change and an address change on the same day, which can trigger a review and put you at suspension risk.
After changing, allow a few weeks before judging the effect.
