Why your business is not showing on Google Maps

If customers cannot find you on Google Maps, one of six things is happening. Work through them in order — the first match is almost always your answer.

1. The profile was never verified

This is the most common reason by a wide margin. A profile that has not passed verification does not appear in the local results customers actually see. You may find it by searching your exact business name and nothing else — which is not how customers search.

How to check: search your business name on Google Maps. If it appears with “Claim this business”, it is unverified and unowned.

Fix: complete verification.

2. Somebody else owns your listing

Google sometimes creates listings automatically from public information. Until you claim it, anyone can — including a competitor or a former staff member. If your listing exists but you cannot edit it, someone else may hold it.

Fix: see claiming a business already on Google.

3. You are ranked, but not in the top three

Google shows three businesses in the local pack. Position four is effectively invisible — you exist, but nobody scrolls. Owners often assume they are missing entirely when they are simply below the fold.

How to check: search your main keyword, then tap to see more results. If you appear at position five or nine, this is your situation.

Fix: ranking work — see how to reach the top three.

4. Your category is wrong

Category is the strongest single lever on your profile. A business listed under a broad category will lose to one listed under the precise category a customer is searching for. A shop selling phones listed as “Electronics store” will struggle against one listed as “Cell phone store”.

Fix: choosing the right category.

5. The profile was suspended

If your listing was visible and then vanished, it was probably suspended. Keyword-stuffed names are the usual cause.

Fix: recovering a suspended profile.

6. Your address cannot be placed

Where addresses are described by landmark rather than number, Google may not be able to plot you accurately. If your pin sits on the wrong street, you will not surface for people searching nearby.

Fix: correct the pin manually in your profile and make sure the written address matches what your signboard and documents say.

The quickest way to know

Open Google Maps on a phone that is not signed in to your business account, and search the way a customer would — not your business name, but what you sell plus your area. “Phone shop Ogui Road”. “Rod dealer Enugu”. What you see is what your customers see.

Search your own name too. If it shows “Claim this business”, you have an unclaimed listing sitting exposed.

Common questions

Why does my business show when I search the name but not otherwise?

Your profile likely exists but is unverified or poorly optimised. Exact-name searches can surface almost anything; category searches only surface profiles Google trusts and understands.

How long after verification before I appear?

Usually within days of approval, though ranking for competitive searches takes longer and depends on category, reviews and completeness.

Does having a website help my Maps ranking?

It helps. Google looks for consistency between your profile and a real website, and a linked site adds credibility to the listing.

Can two businesses share one address?

Yes, if each is genuinely a separate business with its own entrance, signage and staff. Multiple listings at one address without that are a suspension risk.
